"Since the era of excavations began, never has there been unearthed in Egypt, or Syria, or Babylonia, to name but the most important fields of investigation, a document more considerable in its great moral import and broad scope, than the code of Hammurabi. One can unhesitatingly say that the Code of Hammurabi, is one of the monuments, not only of the history of the peoples of the Orient, but of the history of mankind. This is private law formulated in clear short sentences, which at the center of the ages, fixed previous secular customs and remained the basis of the future legislation of the Babylonian lands, until the fall of the empire."
