King Hammurabi (1810-1750 B.C.E.) ruled the Babylon Empire and was its greatest ruler. He extended his empire northward from the Persian Gulf to the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and westward to the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. After consolidating his gains under a central government at Babylon, he devoted his energy to protecting his empire and fostering its internal prosperity in various ways.

The true pronunciation of King Hammurabi's name has still not been discovered. Both "Hammurabi" and "Hammurapi" are possible pronunciation, although the former is more widely used.
